Classical musicians are not usually very successful when they attempt popular songs, much less third world styles. This album came over the transom as part of Anne-Sophie's gorgeous and rare 40 CD box set "ASM35 - The Complete Musician".
I wasn't expecting too much but Tango Song and Dance completely shattered my low expectations because I had overlooked the key factor: Anne-Sophie's husband at the time, Andre Previn. If anyone knew how to harmonize classical music with jazz and pop, it was the versatile Previn. The joyous music here reflects the happiness of their recent marriage. Previn contributed "Tango Song and Dance", a vivacious suite dedicated to his wife and plays it with her. They also deliver a sparking performance of Jascha Heifetz's transcription of four songs from "Porgy and Bess" for piano and violin.
The album is filled out with three more excellent duets featuring Mutter with her regular collaborator, Lambert Orkis. Brahms' Hungarian Dances, Kreisler's Viennese miniatures and Faure's Sonata No. 1 have more than enough ethnic flair to fit with Gershwin and Previn's tangos.
on the Sam-O-Meter. You can't judge a book by its cover.
