Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt & Guy Clark - Together At The Bluebird Cafe (2001)

The notes say this album was recorded at a benefit concert on September 13, 1995. I hope it raised a boatload of money, because you will never experience a better guitar pull with three legendary songwriters at the peak of their respective games on stage at the ultimate Nashville unplugged venue.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Michael Nesmith - And The Hits Just Keep On Comin' (1972)

I decided to pay tribute to Monkee Mike as I did with Charlie Watts, by picking a bucket list album that I had never quite gotten around to.

In his four years on RCA after leaving the group, Mike released four innovative but challenging albums with his First and Second National Bands. Their sound was vaguely country rock, but each one was a little more off center than the last. Apparently ATJKOC was recorded under severe time constraints with only Nesmith and steel guitar wizard Red Rhodes. At this time Mike was touring with just Rhodes, so this barebones approach isn't as startling as it might seem.

The songwriting sounds anything but rushed, with Mike's trademark irony, wistfulness and emotional transparency clearly in evidence. We even get a completely reimagined version of "Different Drum" from the male perspective that can stand proudly beside the Stone Poneys' version with Linda Ronstadt. Mike had found Rhodes toiling in the house band at The Palomino. Whisking him off stage and into the studio tapped a rich vein of creativity that largely defined Nesmith's country sound.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter. Michael Nesmith is one of few artists whose singing and writing can both hold up under the intense scrutiny of this intimate format.

Buying Hint: Look for the expanded edition with a heartfelt version of "Some Of Shelly's Blues" that eclipses the familiar Nitty Gritty Dirt Band hit.
