Four Tops - Reach Out - album cover

Haven't really listened to this soul classic because probably 5-6 of the songs on it (e.g. "Reach Out, I'll Be There", "Bernadette", "Standing in the Shadows of Love" are on good Four Tops compilations. But on looking at track listing today, I noticed they interestingly cover two Monkees songs ("Last Train to Clarksdale" not so good, "I'm a Believer" better) as well as The Association's "Cherish". Again their choice of covers were very odd IMO but had to check them out even if the end results didn't work out.
Otherwise, a killer album of Motown hits

Wes Montgomery - A Day in the Life (1967)

Wes Montgomery - A Day in the Life - album cover

The first album on Creed Taylor's CTI label with guitarist Montgomery jazz cover of "A Day in the Life" recorded less than a month after the release of Sgt. Pepper's. Several other jazz covers here including The Association's "Windy" (hey it's Association cover day), "Eleanor Rigby", and (intriguingly) Leslie Gore's "California Nights" (written by Marvin Hamlisch). Indeed this new CTI label would be unique
This album actually hit #13 on The Billboard 200 (and #1 on the jazz album chart)

You might ask, of all Tchaikovsky symphonies - with the Little Russian, the Polish, 4th, 5th, the Pathétique, even the Manfred - what Luddite, what musical lightweight, what classical numbnuts, would prefer his first, his baby symphony, Winter Dreams?

Answer: this guy. [No, none of the current memes for this guy will do.]

I remember one occasion of listening to the DGG / MTT version off a cassette in a tent on the beach at Assoteague Island while we were taking tequila shots.

I sort of remember it, anyway. Yeah, I'm going with that.

That consolidated my love for this symphony, and for the phrase, "Bite me."
