Claude Thornhill and His Orchestra ~ Snowfall (CD 1978, Hindsight Records)

Considering its age, this is remarkably well-restored and high-fidelity (i.e., Claude's piano sounds like a piano, and the orchestra does not sound chunky, but like a band of instruments). The notes on the rear cover reveal:

Hindsight Records has made it possible for listeners to enjoy the music of the 1930's and 1940's carefully restored, utilizing the advanced "Sonic Solutions" and "CEDAR AUDIO" digital technology.

From the collection of the late John C.

Vinyl Rip Of The Day. My scan, too.

Velma was the preeminent Slovenian vocalist in Detroit. She is backed here by Eddie Adamic, no slouch himself. The Cleveland Style Polka Hall Of Fame website tells us:

Inspired by the pioneers of the Cleveland sound in the mid-1940s, Eddie Adamic became Detroit's exponent of Cleveland-Style polkas. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Eddie learned Slovenian folk music from his parents and was performing by age 14. Leading the Eddie Adamic Orchestra from 1952 -1965, Eddie was associated with the Ronnie Dodich and Dennis Tatomir Orchestras from 1965 -1975 and started his own band again in 1975. Eddie has appeared on radio and television, performed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Canada, and led polka tours to Slovenia, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Spain. Eddie has five recordings to his credit, the latest a joint effort with the Klancnik Brothers and vocalists Stan and Velma Kapel. Eddie was inducted into the State of Michigan Polka Music Hall of Fame in 1982.

How can you tell when guitars are ripe and ready for picking?

Gilad Hekselman - This Just In (2013)

mostly guitar/bass/drums with some tenor sax and sly synths every now and again
like drizzle on a steamy sunny summer day at the lake
but also reminds me of a
sexy hip French cult film recently made but vibing like 1977
(or do these descriptions say more about me than the album? :axo: )

Prince - Chaos And Disorder (1996)

An album he (supposedly) released to help be done with his WB contract, this is Prince throwing down some serious guitar funk/rock. I've always loved this album. While not one of the rockers, "Dinner With Delores" is a great tune and maybe my favorite on here.

I'm probably going to take a break after this one. The next 2 are the 3 disc Emancipation and the 4 disc Crystal Ball (technically CB is 3 discs but the set I bought with the clear plastic disc holder also included The Truth).

Edit: Also, I've never been too much of a fan of Emancipation, so I'm really not looking forward to 3 hours of an album I'm not crazy about.

David Bowie - David Bowie is Alive and Well and Living Only in Theory (1974)

David Bowie - David Live - album cover

After listening to Young Americans, I intended on just going through Bowie's studio albums (at least until the quality dips down in the mid 80s) but David Live (I appropriated Bowie's own less-than-favorable later critique of the album above) stood there as an intriguing transition album (between Diamond Dogs and his Philly soul periods) that I'm not sure I've ever spun in its entirety. Aside from the cheesy cover and a cover of "Knock on Wood", it's still mainly Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, and Diamond Dogs material (but with more sax - including David Sanborn) - it's not very well respected (and the band lacks the punch of the Spiders of Mars - though Earl Slick is a good guitarist) but it's not bad either with fans giving it a kinder reappraisal than critics.
