Raw acoustic country with a gospel slant from the late Charlie Louvin's niece. Her life can't have been easy; dad, Ira Louvin, was married four times and had a history of both spousal abuse and DUI. Ironically, he died in a car crash caused by another drunk driver. This album showcases Kathy's stark, emotional vocals and autoharp, with support from Tim Stafford, Carl Jackson, Tammy Rogers-King and Shawn Camp, all familiar names to bluegrass fans.
Bruce Springsteen - LA Sports Arena, California 1988
Chronological Bruce 327 songs down and only up to 1988, you may ask? Including albums and outtakes, this is my sixth full concert (not including the five-album Live 1975-85 box set).
The Tunnel of Love tour was by all accounts a strange one with Bruce bringing in the Miami Horns, the band playing less of a roll, singer (and future Mrs. Springsteen) Patty Scialfa moved up front and center, and the concert beginning with a carnival-style ticket seller onstage. Still, if there were band tensions, this show doesn't show it - excellent set mixing old and new material and some non-album tracks ("Light of Day" then new but a future concert staple, "War", "I'm A Coward", "Part Man, Part Monkey") and a "Happy Birthday" singalong to Roy Orbison who was in the audience. Bruce would soon go solo with no one sure if we'd ever seen him with the E-Street Band again (of course they'd reunite in 1999 eleven years later and have been touring since).
