Mary Halvorson - Paimon: Book Of Angels Volume 32 (2017)

Part of John Zorn's "Book Of Angels" series. He composes and produces the series, but usually does not perform with the bands. Klezmer Jazz with some of Halvorson's usual skullduggery.

The Bar-Kays - Nightcruising (1981)

Parts of this sound like Rick James, The Gap Band, Cameo, the Commodores, LTD and several other funk hitmakers of the time, even a touch of Prince. And it never sounds derivative. It just sounds like a great band playing music it loves.

Were the Bar-Kays expertly adopting minor cues from current trends (as they always did) or had those other acts borrowed and amplified discrete facets of the Bar-Kays wide-ranging style?

SFJazz Collective - Live SFJAZZ Center 2016: Music of Miles Davis and Original Compositions (disc 2 of 2)

I really do like the most recent SFJC album that covers the entire Stand! album by Sly Stone, but I have a hard time rating it. It's suffering from the compare-likes syndrome. If I compare it to any other similar album, it's very good. If I compare it to other SFJazz Collective albums, it's probably the lowest-rated SFJC album. Since my lowest rated SFJC album has :4.0:, does that mean I cannot go over :3.5: for the Stand! album? Something about an album full of vocals just seems a little off for a SFJC album.

So this morning, I go back a couple of years to listen to another SFJC album.

Earth Wind & Fire - That's The Way Of The World (1975)

a RYM reviewer said:
One of the best records of the 70s - unless one detests brightness, joy and confidence in music - and life.
I agree, except I'd replace "the 70s" with "ever".

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead (2006)

For nearly 18 years, I've bought the edited-for-profanity version of every album whenever possible. Now that my son thinks he's an young adult, he says I don't have the "real" albums and wants me to buy the unedited versions. Ahhhh, da yout'.

Freddie Hubbard - Bolivia (1991)

I like this. Really. And I know that most Jazz fans despise his post CTI albums from 1975-1980.

But I wish Freddie had been allowed to continue to expand his vision and grow his sound naturally. This is nice, but it would be nice to hear what he might have been doing had he continued on that path for another decade.
