The Roots - undun (2012)

Time was, The Roots would release an album and I'd keep it in rotation for a year or so until their next album was released. Almost constantly, The Roots were in my ears and I was constantly reminded of their greatness. Now, their albums are dropping years apart and months can pass between listens. Yet, when I spin one I am always reminded of their greatness.

The Roots - Rising Down (2008)

The opening track is an actual conference call (not a re-enactment) between three or four of the group's members. It goes from a conversation to an airing of grievances to an argument to a shouting match to a guy losing his f*cking mind. What does it say about me that I love listening to that?

It reminds me of another Hip Hop album opening track where a guy driving a car is on the phone with someone and he says, "hold on, wait a minute, someone just hit my rental."
EDIT: It turns out the last track on this album is the actual phone call where the speaker's rental car is hit.

Donny McCaslin - Perpetual Motion (2011)

This is a feature as much for the electric bass and keyboards/synthesizers as much as it is for Donny's sax.
The title of track 7, "LZCM", stands for Led Zepplin and Christian McBride, to whom the song pays tribute.

Kenny Dorham - Afro-Cuban (1955)

I wanted to do a little comfort reading and settled on 1954's "Find A Victim". Wanting to match the period reading with some period music, this fits the bill nicely. Although, now that I think about it more, maybe some cool west coast Jazz would have been a better match for southern Cali-hopping Lew Archer. If I keep reading long enough this morning, I'll rectify that.
