Porter Wagoner & Skeeter Davis - Sing Duets (1962)

MC02NjYxLmpwZWc.jpeg

Before Dolly, even before Norma Jean, Porter recorded this collection with Skeeter Davis. The Nashville Sound production of Chet Atkins skillfully blended pop and country influences, with the steel guitar of Pete Drake a real highlight. Porter and Skeeter blend well on a group of songs that suits them perfectly.

Before I moved to the South, I would have been surprised at the name "Skeeter" for a woman, but now not surprising at all
Granted Skeeter isn't her birth name

From Wiki:
Because her grandfather thought she had a lot of energy for a young child, he nicknamed Mary Frances "Skeeter" (slang for mosquito), a name she carried for the rest of her life

Shay Torrent - Center Field Serenade (or Music I Dug Out) (1967)

Vinyl Rip of the Day.

Although I grew up in LA, I lived for three years in Orange County where I went to college. So the California Angels were my home team.

I went to many an Angels game at Anaheim Stadium with my friend Jimmy The CPA. One of the highlights was always organist Shay Torrent. Unlike Helen Dell at Dodger Stadium, Shay injected some humor into the proceedings. When the game started, he played "Three Blind Mice" as the umpires took the field. He also gave each Angel player a theme song. The only one I can recall offhand was "On, Wisconsin!" for Badger alum Rick Reichardt. Throughout the game he threw in oddities like "The Addams Family Theme" and the clap along favorite "Mexican Hat Dance".

This album holds a bakers dozen songs actually recorded on the stadium organ. In the above photo you can see the speaker tower out in center field. The repertoire includes tunes he played a lot, including the obligatory "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" and "Springtime In The Rockies" dedicated to team owner Gene Autry.

Those Angel teams were pretty mediocre but Shay enlivened every game. This record sure brings back a lot of memories. R.I.P. Jimmy. :(

This, here (2008)

yuval ron st jacques.jpg

International composer, producer and world music artist Yuval Ron takes on a highly symbolic endeavor, to unite chants from the three religious traditions of the Middle East into a handful of harmonic musical medleys. His deeply moving weaving of ancient sacred music from the Hebrew, Maronite, Armenian and Sufi traditions results in a decidedly contemplative, meditative and introspective experience. Upon hearing a performance on the Oud by Yuval Ron, Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, head of the Sufi Order International, remarked: \'While deep practice of one\'s religious tradition is like sounding a note, a note of great integrity and beauty, bringing together many sacred traditions through the harmony of music expands the notes into a symphony!\' Recorded in live recitals on April 18, 2007 at Chapelle de Cgan (built 12th Century) in Arthez and on April 19, 2007 at Notre Dame a Sarrance (built 14th century) in Sarrance. Both chapels are on the historic pilgrimage road "Route de St. Jacques de Compostelle" ("Camino de Santiago de Compostela") in Basque region, France.

And, he's out at the plate! By a mile, and at least several decades.

Dig that Continental Mark II parked next to the VW. The Angels were nothing if not egalitarian. :worm:

I spot a couple of Ford Mustangs in there, as well.

Who knew the Angels would win the WS in 2002? Who knew they would be dabbling with the luxury tax 20 years after that?

Back to the music... Does it bring a tear to your eye?
