The Halle Orchestra (Mark Elder, cond.) - Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" (comp. 1942, rec. 2014)

NjQtOTE2MS5qcGVn.jpeg

Mark Elder and The Halle's fairly recent performance of Shostakovich's wartime anthem is a complete triumph. Scored for a massive orchestra only slightly smaller than the Army of the Soviet Union, this lengthy work carries a strong risk of lapsing into turgidity. But Elder's probing treatment digs deeply into the slow passages and then sets the finale free to work all of its victorious magic.

6 Big Hits! 6 Answers!

Interesting concept album paired a half dozen big country hits by male singers with answer songs from the female perspective performed by Skeeter. The answer song has a long tradition in country music. Perhaps the best known is Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", a sassy riposte to Hank Thompson's "Wild Side Of Life" which had offered this sexist bit of barroom philosophy:

I didn't know God made honky tonk angels
I might have known you'd never make a wife
You gave up the only one that ever loved you
And went back to the wild side of life.
