Linda Oh - Walk Against Wind (2017)

lindaohwalkagainstwind_ha.jpg

@JazzyRandy posted one of Linda's earlier efforts in this thread. That one is not on Spotify but this, her latest, is. I really appreciate jazz bass, perhaps because Mingus was one of the first postwar artists I could dig. The fact that Mrs. Ojai plays Korean classical drums gives this record an added appeal, since Oh works various Korean instruments and rhythms into her work without falling into the fusion trap. WAW feels fresh and contemporary, the jagged guitar work of Matthew Stevens being especially notable. I think @axolotl will like this one, too.

I will definitely seek out more of Oh's work.

All About Jazz sez:

Walk Against Wind is a mature work that perfectly balances different musical elements. The prewritten and the spontaneously created seamlessly meld and miscellaneous inspirations fuse into a singular and sublime whole. It is Oh's best release to date and, hopefully, a sign of what is to come next.
Personnel: Linda May Han Oh: bass, voice; Ben Wendel: saxophone; Matthew Stevens: guitar; Justin Brown: drums; Fabian Almazan: piano; Minji Park: janggu & kkwaenggwari.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. Thanks, Randy!

Glad you like her. I have become a full-fledged Oh convert and can't wait to listen to that one. Unfortunately, I don't think she's released a physical product yet for that album. Soon....

Phonte and Eric Roberson - Tigallerro (2016)

HipHopDX said:
...there are multiple intense where both Phonte and Roberson are harmonizing choruses, verses and bridges together over lots of rhythmic baselines and traditional blues instrumentation. Based on those overall sonics, the scales are tipped more towards R&B than authentic rap but Phonte’s standout sixteens even things out.
...
Creating smooth backdrops for your summer BBQs or Sunday afternoon drive were all but a given ... but Team Tigallerro promotes a positivity that seems to be long forgotten.

Prince - The Slaughterhouse

It's not first tier Prince, but Prince getting funky is always worth listening to.

Joe Jackson - I'm the Man (1979)

Wonderful sophomore album by Jackson which, for unclear reasons, I never breakout despite my love for his debut and for Stepping Out.
When I do play it, I hear the opening "On the Radio" and ask myself why haven't I spun this in awhile

Captain Beefheart - Doc At The Radar Station (1980)

Paper and wire killed my brother and my sister too
And if you don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get you too
And if I don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get me too
Telephone
Telephone
Telephone
Telephone
Well I strangled the cord
Ripped it off of the phone
And I saw the bone
And I saw the twinkling lights
It must have been rats
‘Cause it sure was a drone
It sure was a drag
Paper and wire killed my brother and my sister too
And if you don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get you
And if I don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get me too
Telephone
Telephone
Telephone
And I strangled
And I ripped the cord
And I saw the bone
And I heard these tweetin’ things
N twinkling lights
N there was nobody home
Where are all those nerve endings coming out of the bone?
Telephone
Telephone
Well I ripped the cord right out of the phone
And I saw the bone
There the gleaming white bone
Telephone
Paper and wire killed my brother and my sister too
And if you don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get you
And if I don’t watch out
You know they’re going to get me too
Telephone
Telephone
And I can’t get away
And I can’t get away
It’s like a grey adder at the end of the hall
It’s like a plastic horned devil
