Have a Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box

MI0001900794.jpg

Crazy day yesterday that I'm still braindead from - so the lazy mind's way of choosing today's music listening. "What box set do I want to break out?"
First five songs:
"Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse
"Venus" by Shocking Blue
"Rose Garden" by Lynn Anderson
"American Woman" by The Guess Who
"Green-Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf
and so on for 164 songs
You get the idea. Kitschy comfort food (but some great stuff in there too)

A friend sent this youtube link of Tori Kelly doing what I think this girl does best - solo acoustic guitar and voice. Her guitar style has this delicate, airy quality that I really enjoy. I can't quantify why I like her voice so much, it must just be a personal preference thing.

Then I found this nifty R & B Gospel song she did.

So I listened to her one studio release. It's good, but a lot of the songs are over-produced and a little formulaic - pushing her into a sea of other very good young female singers.

Wikipedia reported that in 2012 she released an independent EP that she produced, wrote, and mixed herself. I found it on Amazon, so now listening to:

Ok. I'm done now.

Peter Rowan - Carter Stanley's Eyes (2018)

MI0004404333.jpg

Tom Lehrer once remarked that "it is a sobering thought that when Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years." Serious health issues recently forced Peter Rowan at age 75 to contemplate his own mortality. The result was this deeply reflective traditional bluegrass album.

Stylistically, this is a departure for the bluegrass bad boy, who, despite his early service in Bill Monroe’s band, has been relentlessly eclectic. The title cut pays tribute to bluegrass legend Carter Stanley, brother of Ralph, who died at age 41 of an alcohol related illness. It recounts a visit Rowan and Monroe paid to Carter shortly before his death. Every song here, including two written by Carter Stanley himself, bears witness to Rowan’s rich musical life.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter. Let’s see, when Mozart was MY age, he’d been dead 31 years. :(

I was in a bassist sort of mood yesterday and listened to these two albums ...
Dave Holland - Pathways (2010)
Mike Formanek - Low Profile (1994)

Followed those ^ with these two ...
The Foreign Exchange - Love In Flying Colors (2013)
Freddie Hubbard - First Light (1971)

Now finishing up this contemplative but technically fiery album
Gilad Hekselman - Hearts Wide Open (2011)

Years ago, I got this mostly because I wanted to hear more music with Mark Turner on tenor sax and because he wasn't releasing anything under his own name the only way to hear him was to buy albums headlined by other musicians. After listening to this, I became a fan of Gilad Hekselman's guitar work, and now I track down his albums, with or without Mr Turner's presence.
