Marc-Andre Hamelin:Alkan: Grande Sonate 'Les Quatre Âges' . Sonatine . Le Festin D'Esope (1995)
It's hard to say who is more mad: the composer of these tumultuous works or the reckless pianist who dares to tackle them. Hamelin is the perfect artist for the job. He races right to the edge of madness but always returns to the land of the living just in time.
Bing Crosby - I'm An Old Cowhand (rec. 1933-44, ASV Living Era comp. 1995)
It is one of the crueler ironies of the music biz that Bing Crosby is known today solely as a purveyor of holiday cheer. The reality is that his vast recorded output took on every imaginable genre, with most of these efforts highly successful. Country and Western songs were no exception; throughout his career the outset he had an affinity for material with a rural focus. This album captures the best of his work in this style, from early sentimental ballads like "Home On The Range" to his jazzy rave up on "Pistol Packin' Mama" with The Andrews Sisters.
When he crooned Johnny Mercer's "I'm An Old Cowhand (From The Rio Grande)" (backed by Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra, no less), Der Bingle knew whereof he sang. For many years he operated a cattle ranch near Elko, Nevada.
An entire album of covers was risky but the Isleys pulled it off with bravado. Their angry 9 minute mashup of CSNY's "Ohio" and Jimi's "Machine Gun" opened with a bang. Further on, we witness their total deconstruction of whitebread folksters Bob Dylan and James Taylor, then on to Bill Wither's "Cold Bologna" with Bill himself on greasy guitar. This album is less a time capsule than an alternative view of the post-hippie hangover days from across the tracks.
