Quincy Jones produced this classic of long ago, so it's no surprise to encounter some "background vocal fills" by Michael Jackson. This beautifully engineered, mastered and pressed record still sounds great on vinyl today.
I much prefer Neil Young when he rocks, and this kind of music always sounds to me like infinite variations on "Oh Susana." However, upon second listen, when I knew what I was getting, I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars.
You may recall I posted recently about Slug's Saloon. This firecracker of an album exploded on stage there some 50 years ago. The Jazz Messengers included Ronnie Matthews, Larry Evans, Bill Hardman, Julian Priester and Billy Harper. Not the biggest names but these kids rock out here, propelling Blakey himself to a whole new level of aggression on the drums. With every set I hear, I am becoming increasingly convinced that the intense vibe at Slug's brought out the best in those musicians lucky enough to appear there.
