The Gazetteers ~ Territory Songs (2002)

I made the determination to listen to something I had not listened to in a very long time, and a requirement was, it had to be a little bit on the wacky side. Most wacky stuff I let go by the wayside, as I don't readily relate to material that it is over-the-top silly or wacky.

The oddness of this particular indie rock album is that ukulele is used on many songs (the album is mostly acoustic), and each song's lyrics mention a state or territory of the United States. Frank Boscoe, one of the participants, is also a member of Vehicle Flips, another obscure indie rock band that I like. I doubt either of these groups are presently active; please enlighten me if they are. ;)

I'm not always sure that I can discern a difference between coincidence and serendipity, but I had an interesting discovery when I played this album and then looked it up on RYM for posting here: I initially rated it as :3.5: on March 30, 2009. <cue Twilight Zone ending credit music>

The Volebeats ~ Up North (1994)

You can't beat a fence and a barn for an album cover. Add snow, and you have surefire eye-popper, at least for me. I'm a little strange that way. (No, the experience isn't particularly painful.)

The attraction for me here, however, is that this album is by The Volebeats, who had a mild-to-moderate degree of success with their brand of Alt-Country fare. I first heard their 1999 CD, Solitude, after it was shipped to me back-in-the-day by another member at Peewee's Playhouse, aka lala.com. I didn't rate it until much later.

I like this one too, but I'm not ready to rate it quite yet.
