The Poppies - Lullaby Of Love (1966)

OTctOTkzNC5qcGVn.jpeg

Delightfully exuberant girl group. RIYL The Cookies, The Dixie Cups, The Toys...you get the idea.

The Poppies were produced by Billy Sherrill, former leader of a jump blues band and manager of Sam Phillips' unsuccessful Sun Records Nashville studio. Billy soon thereafter gained considerable success and fame in the country field with pop-styled productions for Charlie Rich, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Barbara Mandrell and a host of others. Billy also produced Almost Blue, Elvis Costello's Nashville album. Apparently he didn't get along very well with Declan, however.

Buying Tip: Go for the Japanese CD with four bonus tracks.

The Philadelphia Orchestra (Eugene Ormandy, cond.) - Hindemith: Matthias The Painter Symphony (1942)

MzgtMzE3OS5qcGVn.jpeg

From Discogs:

"Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony was a mere six years old when Ormandy made the recording included here. It was only the second version on disc, following the composer’s own 1934 recording; and the two would go on to become the only sets available during the 78 rpm era. As so often when they were playing what was then 'new music', Ormandy and his Philadelphians bring an almost missionary zeal to the performance, which blazes with intensity, particularly in the brass."

Trivia note: this was one of 23 sides recorded by Ormandy on Sunday, October 20, 1940.

Because of travels tomorrow (father-in-law passed away :( , started my weekly playlist going through the music of 1972
As expected, tons of great songs especially with folks like Bowie, Van Morrison, Lou Reed, Al Green, The Stones, Curtis Mayfield, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Eagles, Stevie Wonder etc. making music
