Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Six Northern California musicians embraced Balkan music despite the fact that none of them was from that region. A hand-lettered booklet supplies the background and complex rhythmic structure of each song. A complete delight from start to finish.

Trivia note: When these songs originated In Macedonia long ago, the lead dancer always symbolized opposition to their Ottoman Turkish rulers by performing with his fist clenched behind his back.

So, it wasn't for balance after all. :axo:

What? The :axo: didn't load? Have I been discounted?

I will now dance with my fist clenched behind my back.

Melissa Etheridge - Your Little Secret (1995)

MusicBoomerang Trade of the Day.

In small doses, I really enjoy Melissa. John Shanks' electric guitar adds lots of crunch and, as AMG puts it, "she may not have had a lot to say or much craft in saying it, but she wanted you to know she really meant it." That's good enough for a hot Thursday afternoon.

:3.5: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Ruth MacKenzie - Kalevala: Dream Of The Salmon Maiden (1998)

Omnium Records explains:

Omnium is proud to present the original cast recording of Ruth MacKenzie’s Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden. This soaring blend of powerful music, song and dance was a complete sellout for its first two theatrical runs, and the music is now captured on CD.

Based on a Finnish saga, it’s the story of the untamable within us, exploring the thin line between earth, animal and the human voice. In 1993, while on tour in Finland with Red House Records group Trova, Ruth MacKenzie fell under the spell of a vocal style called “kulning” (a high-pitched Swedish song for calling animals). She soon returned to Scandinavia to study this and other traditional vocal styles.

With Kalevala… she has achieved a unique balance between ancient and modern. She sings both in Finnish and English, combining folk melodies with original songs inspired by the tradition.

This CD features a stellar ensemble, including Peter Ostroushko on fiddle and Dean Magraw on guitar.
