Jimmy Greene - Beautiful Life (2014)

Two years after the death of his six-year-old daughter, Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, in the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, saxophonist Jimmy Greene returns with 2014's Beautiful Life. Both a direct response to Ana's death and a celebration of her life, Beautiful Life is a gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting album

I need to give this a fairer shot. I listened to a portion of it once, and it did not immediately catch my fancy, and so I stopped.

I have his Brand New World album on CD, which I did not realize was his first, and have considered it good if a bit uneven.

Perhaps if I can overcome my like/hate relationship with Kurt Elling.

It is good, though I think its history makes me like it even more than I would otherwise.

Is it good enough to overcome a personal vendetta against Mr Elling? Probably not, but getting to a place of peace with the omnipotent Kurt is probably better for your life.

I have a hard time describing this. I have a hard time deciding how much I like it versus how much I appreciate his intentions. I have a hard time deciding that most dangerous question ... "Is this Jazz?"

Based in jazz but encompassing a variety of stylistic touchstones from literate, Bowie-esque post-rock ("I Own the Night") to ambient improvisation ("Diviner [Devan]") and downtempo soundscapes ("Overcomer"), Ancestral Recall is one of the trumpeter's most difficult-to-classify albums, which doesn't mean it's difficult to enjoy.
