Karyn White - Ritual Of Love (1991)

Karyn possessed a great voice and movie star beauty, was discovered by R&B star and super-producer Babyface, who, with his partner Antonio Reid, produced her first album and Babyface sang on one song which was like the's Pope's blessing. That debut stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for seven weeks, spawned three #1 R&B singles and another that was in the top 10, went platinum, and won a Grammy. Not long after her debut became a smash hit, Karyn married a member of the other R&B hitmaking super-producers of the era, Terry Lewis of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, formerly of Prince's side band The Time, who produced several Janet Jackson albums and many other hits of the time.

Jam & Lewis naturally took over the production of Karyn's second album, Ritual Of Love. It sounds very much like a Janet Jackson album from the time, but Karyn did not possess the Jackson family's crossover appeal and it did not match Janet's numbers. Jam & Lewis invited L.A. & Babyface to contribute half the songs on Karyn's third album a couple years later, and while it was a very good album featuring contrasting production styles, sadly her star had already dimmed.

Karyn retired after that third album and focused on being a mother and wife. 18 years later, in 2012 after her children were grown, she released her fourth and final album.

Joe Sample ~ Ashes to Ashes (1990)

An Amazon reviewer wrote:
Sample's Ashes to Ashes was released in 1990, but, here it is a century later, and the music has remained ageless. Masterfully creative and skillfully played, Sample has a secret love affair with the piano, and each cut on this CD is like a page out of his diary. Every time you play this CD you will hear something different, and when you're not listening to it, you'll hear his piano in your head.

I'm sure he meant well, but I think his calendar is off by a few decades.

Francoise Poulenc ~ Ave Verum, Cello Sonata, Salve Regina, Exultate Deo, etc. (2002)

A funny thing happened to me on the way to liking this composer. I didn't.

I listened to some of his compositions some 40 years ago. I listened to some others, today.

Alas, I just don't gel with this composition style.
