I have played this three times since yesterday, when I picked it up.
It reminds me of of the finger-picked acoustic stylings (fingerstyle) of Michael Hedges, Alex DeGrassi, and William Ackerman.

Jason Palmer with Cedric Hanriot - City Of Poets (2016)
This has buzzed around my radar for a couple of years now, but it never quite made it into the cart. True to form, though I received this over a week ago, it didn't get played until today.
I don't know what I expected from this. There's a lot going on in the background of the creation of this album: The cover art, that the songs borrow titles from the sci-fi novels of Dan Simmons, the concept of employing advanced (to me) music theory stuff to the songs, and the fact that Palmer went to Europe and employed a Frenchman pianist. I know the sound Palmer usually shoots for, but I thought this was going to be some clunky (in a good way), experimental (in a hopefully good way), and because Donny McCaslin is involved, employ some measure of techno wizardry.
I was mistaken on all counts. This is a mostly contemporary post-bop adventure, with lots of great interplay and fun highlights. The music theory stuff flew over my head, so I can't say if they succeeded with that part -- they definitely succeeded in creating a great little Jazz album. I'm accustomed to hearing Palmer play with younger less known saxophonists. It is great to hear him play with a well-known well-accomplished saxophonist like McCaslin. They play well together.
