This morning one of Zeeb's faves popped up on my Bethlehem label listening project. Note that Spotify engaged in a little revisionist history with the cover art.
Zeeb has posted about "The King of Jazz" before in his terrific Music of the Century Series. Despite the looming storm clouds of rock and roll, in 1956 Paul Whiteman was still big stuff. To mark his 50th anniversary as an artist, Paul assembled a stellar cast of performers he had boosted back in the day, including Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti and Jack Teagarden. The highlight is a 10 minute excerpt from Whiteman's 1952 radio show featuring a joyous reunion of the original Rhythm Boys in a sketch with Bob Hope. The Dorsey Brothers would both be dead within a year, so in retrospect this all star tribute marked the end of an era.
This beautiful box set came with custom sleeves and a 16 page booklet chock full of rare photos. Whiteman's music melded strains of jazz with orchestral pop music and the high fidelity recordings here do his sophisticated arrangements full justice. Of all these big names, Jack Teagarden steals the show, especially in his two energetic duets with Johnny Mercer.
