Allison Russell - The Returner (2023)
Folk heroine Russell delivers a strong sophomore album with pop melodies dancing with the strong lyrics. I love her videos which are very creative. Here's the new one that dropped a few days ago.
Abram Wilson - Ride! Ferris Wheel to the Modern Day Delta (2007)
Great combination of Jazz and all types of New Orleans music, and a N'awlins version of a Broadway musical that tells a story of a young man unhappy with his life working in a nightclub his family has owned for years and who dreams of something more exciting.
Rawicz & Landauer - Warsaw Concerto (rec. 1936-43, ASV Living Era comp. 1995)
Long before Ferrante & Teicher, Marjan Rawicz and Walter Landauer hit upon the idea of playing light classical music as duets with four hands on two pianos. They were very successful for many years with records, radio and concert tours. However, they dropped quickly from the cultural collective memory, perhaps because they were too light for the classical snobs and too serious for the popsters. In addition to their creative playing of many familiar classical themes, their 6 minute reworking of "Rhapsody In Blue" is electrifying.
In my march through the ASV Living Era catalog, this was a very difficult disc to find. I finally had to resort to a UPC identifier using the bar code.
These are lovely pieces from the pen of Czech composer Bohuslav Jan Martinu (1890-1959). Give me a 20th Century Russian string quartet and I will reach for vodka the better to cry. But play a Czech quartet and I'll sip a glass of Moravian pinot gris and reflect on my life.
