Trees - Sleep Convention (1982)

Taking in the bonus tracks. This reissue was done really well (as are the others this new label has done)...really good sounding with cooperation from the artist and dynamics intact.

Kevn Kinney - MacDougal Blues (1990)

Drivin' n' Cryin's front man stepped out as a solo act with this superb debut album. Produced and accompanied by Peter Buck and the rest of Drivin', Kevn delivers 11 powerful acoustic folk songs. I'm definitely going to check out his later albums.

:4.5: On the Sam-O-Meter. Remember, there's no "i" in "team" or "Kevn".

Chet Baker - Chet Baker With Strings (1954, Columbia Jazz Masterpieces 1991)

I'm starting a new listening project for the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. Back in the early 90's when the compact disc was new, Sony launched a comprehensive reissue program for its massive catalog of classic jazz. This outstanding set covered three early sessions the star-crossed trumpeter made for Columbia fronting a quintet that featured Zoot Sims (tenor sax), Jack Montrose (tenor sax), Russ Freeman (piano), Joe Mondragon (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums). Bud Shank filled in for Sims on alto sax for the last date. Mary Paich, Shorty Rogers and others created lush string arrangements that enhanced the classic cool West Coast vibe.

Oddly enough, the digital reissue changed the title from Chet Baker AND Strings to Chet Baker WITH Strings. Why? Search me.

Is Mary Paich the same as Marty? Or, did they need an administrative assistant?

I loves me some Chet Baker, no matter how star-crossed he was. Trumpeter first, and singer, second. Considering his sad end, his music was consistently upbeat or wistful. Heroin addiction is a royal bitch.
