What Are You Listening To? October 2019

Ghost Rhythms - Live at Yoshiwara (Cuneiform Records, 2019)

Their first live album and their first album on the Cuneiform Records label. Just received it yesterday. The genre: avant-gard jazz.
They are French and I strongly recommend Madeleine, their 2015 album: an alternative soundtrack to the Vertigo movie. A jaw-dropping record, beautiful and astonishing at the same time.

Albino! ~ Rhino (2007)

The SF Music Award-winning ALBINO! is a 12-piece Afrobeat ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Nigerian musical revolutionary Fela Kuti. ALBINO's high-energy grooves and explosive stage show thick with hypnotic percussion, a heavy horn section, African dance, outrageous costumes, and infectious group choreography have established the band as the West Coast's premier Afrobeat act.

Not listed on RYM.

As you might be able to tell (or deduce, somehow) this is Indian Classical Music.

This is more minimal, minor-key, and perhaps slow(core?) than Ravi Shankar's compositions, from my perspective.

Emily Bezar - Moon in Grenadine (DemiVox, 1996)

I don't know if you guys know her music?
She is so talented that it is hard to imagine she is so little known.

Emily Bezar is classically trained on keyboards and voice. She is often compared to Kate Bush or Tori Amos for her voice but making comparisons would not give her justice as her music goes much further.
In "Moon in Grenadine" she experiments with jazz and chamber music. In each album you discover a new facet of her music and the musicians bring her compositions to life in such beautiful ways. Every song of her is a real gem.
