The Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach (1972)

The Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach - album cover

I own this album, but have I listened to the entire album? Hmm, I wonder. Well, tackled it today - most of Duane's swan song is familiar ("Blue Sky", "Melissa", "One Way Out" get frequent rock radio airplay) but seems I would have remembered sitting through the 34 min "Mountain Jam" (which is divided oddly on sides 2 and 4 of the original double LP). Talented musicians but because, as I've aged, I've been less enamored with long rock jams, I hardly listen to the Allman's. Was in the right mood today though

RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra (Kiril Kondrashin, cond.) - Khachaturian: Masquerade Suite/Kabalevsky: The Comedians (1958)

It's been way too busy 'round here lately. :confused:Not much time for posting or listening.

Incidental music like this seems to have fallen out of favor but these two lively suites are full of fun and familiar themes. By the time these recordings were made "The RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra" was less a group than a label for whatever musicians could be lured into the studio. Not to say they are shabby performers, far from it. Many of them played with major orchestras. Sadly, by the 60's RCA exported their classical studio sessions to Europe.

Bavarian Radio Symphony (Eugen Jochum, cond.) - Haydn: St. Cecilia Mass (1959)

This breathtakingly gorgeous work gets its full due in a landmark performance by Eugen Jochum and his merry band of Bavarians. Like several of his contemporaries, Jochum kept his head down during WWII and wound up on the Gottbegnadeten-Liste ("God-gifted list" or "Important Artist Exempt List") along with Furtwangler and many others, thereby avoiding a one-way trip to the Eastern Front. :surrender:

Jill Scott - Woman (2015)

It is one of the great shames of society that this is the last album to be released by Ms Scott. I'm glad her acting career is working for her, but I need more of her in my ears. This perfect gem encompasses Soul/R&B from 1960-2015. A song might evoke 1975, or 1988, or 2002 or 1964. Scott manages to put together a hell of an album musically and lyrically. Truly a master songwriter and song deliverer. Here's my favorite song on an album full of great songs.
And just for fun, here is the marching band version by the Southern University Human Jukebox.
Now I wanna go to an HBCU football game.

Maybe she doesn't want to get paid .000000025 per Spotify stream.

Pistolera - Pistolera (2005)

Brooklyn based Pistolera is one of my absolute favorite groups. Upbeat Mexican music with social consciousness is a winning combination. How can you resist a band with a female accordion player? The gorgeous vocals and political yet playful songs of Sandra Lilia Velasquez sealed the deal for me.

Unfortunately, they have released only 3 studio albums, all of which are fantastic. This live EP is the most elusive item in their catalog. You can buy it today for $144 on Amazon . I found a copy for less than that and am happy I did. This performance on NPR's "Tiny Desk Concert" will show you why I'm in love with the group.

Christian Scott - Anthem (2007)

Jill Scott, Tom Scott, and now Christian Scott. I wonder if anyone can guess where I am in the great re-ripping project? :D

SFJazz Collective - Live 2010: 7th Annual Concert Tour: The Works of Horace Silver (2011) disc 1 of 3

Looking at this, I remembered I bought this at a concert at Duke U and had it signed by three members (Zenon, Simon and Harland) of the band after it was over and they were walking around talking to whoever stuck around.

The previous year's disc honoring McCoy Tyner is also signed by the same three, but Matt Penman also signed that one. I wonder why I didn't ask him to sign this one too?
