Ella Fitzgerald - Ella At The Hollywood Bowl: The Irving Berlin Songbook (rec. 1958, rel. 2022)

Zeeb posted this one back in June but I'm a bit slow on the uptake.

Universal Music keeps mining the Verve vault and coming up with treasures like this one. Ella took her Irving Berlin Songbook album to the Hollywood Bowl the year it was released with a full orchestra led by Paul Weston, who also did the arrangements for the studio album. There are not enough superlatives to describe this perfect union of singer and songwriter. Moreover, as Will Friedwald's insightful liner notes point out, not only was it rare for Ella to appear with an orchestra, but it was unheard of for any artist to fill an entire show with a single album. A remarkable evening captured in excellent sound quality for us to enjoy after 64 years.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. ;)

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (1975)

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - album cover

A protest listen of sorts - though Bruce will be represented with four albums in the Mojo book, oddly they're bypassing what almost everyone considers his best album. I know I'm biased but c'mon!
