What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

After being impressed with the camera work in Blade Runner, I Bing'd the director and discovered I'd never heard of him, nor seen any of his movies. I set out to correct that ...

Arrival

Very good, though the ending left me right in the middle of " ... is that it? ... That can't be the end ..." . But it was.

As with Blade Runner 2049, the camera work alone is worth the price of admission. This time around, the story is better for Denis. After it was done, I'm still marveling that this is basically a 3-character play, with Amy, Jeremy, and Forest. Great acting from those three.

Oh yeah, I absolutely love Amy Adams.
4 stars.

Hoping to check out my next Denis Villeneuve flick soon.

Phantom Thread - 2017

Just saw this one.
Day-Lewis is phenomenal as always.
Production design, costumes are fantastic.
Weird love story. 3.5/5 stars

We watched "Ladybird" yesterday afternoon. I honestly don't understand why people are raving about it. I found it dull, dull, dull.

Hereditary - 2018

This was pretty good. Slow build-up and really good acting by Toni Collette and the kids. Set design was amazing and told much of the story. :3.5:
ETA: I saw this at an afternoon matinee and was the only person in the theater. That upped the scare factor considerably.

Papillon (2018)

I saw the original about a hundred years ago, and thought that it was much better. This iteration was OK, not great. :2.5:

^I need to add that the DVD extras are well worth watching, especially if you're a fan of stop-motion films. The work that went into those puppets is incredible.

Went to see A Star is Born today. Awesome flick with good tunes. :4.0:

Just after the trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody ended with a bit of Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury, some old guy blurts out (loudly) to his wife: "Was that Mick Jagger?", only he pronounced it as "Yagger". Whole theater cracked up.

WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME THERE IS A NEW COEN BROTHERS MOVIE?!!

"The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is on Netflix right now. It's a Western, starring the usual cast of Coen Brothers actors. Plus: singing cowboys!!
Highly recommended by me. So there's that.

eta: this is not one long story; it's six short stories all set in the West. And the stories get progressively darker in tone. Be forewarned.

I want to catch that one. The Coen brothers are batting about 80% with me -- the movies I like I REALLY like, and the ones I don't like I REALLY hate. Always worth the risk!

Been on something of a movie binge over the last few days ...

Blindspotting

It lost a little steam at a scene or two, but otherwise this is an almost great little film.

Crazy Rich Asians

More or less, a straightforward Hollywood romcom straight from the vaults of Hepburn and Grant, but set in Singapore with Asian stars. Truth in advertising, but also very good.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

I feel like I should have been mildly disappointed in this, but watching it made me happy happy joy joy. Empty calories, but of the Krispy Kreme variety that makes it hard to regret the indulgence.

Untouchables

I'd seen this before many years ago, but watched it again today with JazzySon and one of his friends. They lost interest in the movie and toyed with their cell phones after the opening scenes, but by the Canadian border smuggling scene they were too into the movie to care about their phones.

La La Land

What's wrong with this movie? Absolutely nothing! Just watched it with JazzyDaughters, and even the 10 year old, who normally loses interest in movies at about the half-hour mark, was glued to the story till the very last drop. A pure success on so many levels. Simplistic joy that doesn't try to be more than what it is ... and that makes it top notch.

EDIT: Of course, it scored bonus points from me that the male lead was a big time Jazz nerd. I didn't know that going into the movie.

The Exception (2018)

A WWII drama revolving around a disgraced Nazi soldier, a young Dutch maid, and a doddering Kaiser Wilhelm. This is very watchable and I enjoyed it a lot. Not a great movie, but a very good one that is a good way to spend an hour and a half. Despite the guns displayed on the cover, this is less an action War movie than a drama set during a war.

Plummer turns in a phenomenal performance.
