What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

Anthropoid (2016)

2nd WWii movie in two days.

This was another good one. It's about a plot to assassinate Heydrich. I knew a fair amount about Heydrich prior to seeing this movie, but never knew about an assassination attempt. I think being ignorant about that added to the suspense of the movie. Lots of nice period architecture and such.

Recommended.

We saw Clint Eastwood's The Mule last week. It was pretty good.

We both appreciate that he's writing and directing roles for an older actor (granted, himself) and of course that the supporting characters are also going to be older. Hollywood is so obsessed with prettiness and youth and this was a refreshing outlier.

One thing I enjoyed was the depiction of an elderly man, slightly behind the times, unintentionally offending various minority groups and those folks realizing he's harmless and just clueless and being accepting of his diversity as an old white man. People being offered a chance to be indignant but choosing not to was another refreshing outlier.

That went on my list as soon as I heard about it in December. I probably won't get a chance to see it in the theaters, but it sounds good. I'll see it on disc when it comes out.

Sounds like the same character he played in Gran Torino. Except in Gran Torino, the offense wasn't always unintentional. :pMaybe when he writes/directs himself, he is just being himself. Kind of like Woody and Spike.

The Twelfth Man (2017)

During the German occupation of WWII, 12 Norwegian men are tasked to a mission that falls apart and 11 of them are captured. The 12th man must make his way on foot, in winter, injured, to Sweden, to save his life, make the mission not completely wasted, and inspire a country.

This was filmed in Norwegian (I think?) and overdubbed into English, but that does not detract from this film one iota. This is absolutely incredible. You, you, and you, and maybe even you, should see it very soon.

Kin (2018)

A 14-year old boy gets expelled from school after getting into a fight with a bully who insults his recently deceased adopted mother, finds a futuristic weapon, and has trouble living with lifelong adopted father who is also grieving with the death of his wife, and now the biological son of the father returns home from a stint in prison. And that's only the first 20 minutes of the movie. I won't say any more for fear of spoiling it for anyone who might watch it.

This is a stinking poo-fest jumble of plot-points of a story that threaten to conflagrate what little sense this plot has of making and of being enjoyable. Fortunately, the story makes just enough sense, and is sort of ambitious enough (maybe too ambitious) to keep me involved. What also helps is every lead and supporting actor is very watchable and fun to watch. Dennis Quaid was intense and well-cast. The young actor who plays the boy was perfect.

This is bad. But I liked it anyway.
And if there ever is a sequel (which was perfectly set up at the end of this,) it will take the story in an entirely different direction than this movie, it will undoubtedly be twice as unbelievable and twice and bad, and I will be eager to watch it.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls - (2018)

I watched this over the weekend with my two daughters. I went in not expecting much and was surprised by how good this was. Jack Black exceeds my (admittedly low) expectations every time I see him in a movie, and this was no exception. I need to give him more credit for being a fine performer.

^ Guess I'll have to add this one back to my wishlist. It got purged when I got over 450 titles and I wasn't sure I'd like it.

I thought the previews looked interesting, and then I was all "aw, shit. Jack Black is in it". I can't stand his acting.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Watched this one today on DVD. I really cranked up the sound bar. I absolutely LOVED this movie. The music brought back lots of fun memories from college days. I can see why Rami Malek won Best Actor, his performance was nothing short of amazing.
4.5/5stars oh yeah, we have those: :4.5:

Widows (2018)

This was enjoyable, but also too ambitious. It tries to be a caper movie, speak to a few social issues and political issues, and be a drama. Graded as any of those individually, it would probably rate as less than satisfactory. Taken as a movie to watch and kill some time (not a "film" but a movie,) it is good.
The females nail every line and emotion. The guys hold up well enough, but it's like putting a show dog next to a family pet.

School was out yesterday because a lot of teachers were marching on the state legislature to ask for better funding. So, my son and I, with the girls checking in occasionally to see if they might be interested, watched this pair of DVDs.

Slavery By Another Name

The former is a documentary adaptation of a book I read/listened to last month. The latter is a comedy set among the backdrop of convict slavery.

It was a good way to absorb the topic through two different vehicles. JazzyJr was captivated by both.

So basically, homeschooling but with popcorn.

North By Northwest (1959)

I was completely swept away with this. It's been a while since I last saw it, long enough that much of it was "new" to me.

JazzyJr on the other hand was less than impressed. Kids! Oh well, the Hitchcock educational tour will continue undaunted.

See You Yesterday - (2019)

Netflix flick about teenagers who invent a time-travel machine. I had low expectations but it was good. The Michael J Fox role was a pleasant surprise. I usually have low expectations for Netflix productions, but I've been surprised enough to maybe give them the benefit of the doubt. The low budgets show in the lack of special effects, but the stories are usually very well done -- at least in the two or three that I've watched.

Cold Pursuit - 2019
2672

This is waaaaayyy better than your average revenge thriller. It's an adaptation of a Finnish (I think) movie that I haven't seen. I was expecting a typical shoot-em-up thing and was pleasantly surprised. Some laugh out loud moments. :4.0:
