Random Food Thoughts

I was looking on line the other day for a matarello, which is a long, straight, wooden rolling pin used by Italian nonnas for rolling out pasta by hand. They are usually around 2" thick and between three and four feet long. I found a bunch of nice ones on line, but they range from $125 - $150 or more. That struck me as ridiculous. I've got nice wood in the barn for making one, but no lathe to turn one on. Then the light bulb went on!
I found a 1.75" X 36" cherry wood dowel on a woodworking supply site. A whopping $20 plus $8 for shipping. I might just have to do a fine sanding on it.
Maybe I should buy a few hundred and sell them on line for $75 each. I'd make a killing.

In my ongoing quest to put meals together without really cooking, I came up with the following:

1 can Hormel Chili with beans (Hormel Chili without beans is nasty, IMO)
1 container Minute White (or Jasmine) Rice
2 teaspoons (Target brand) Good and Gather Vegan Dressing (like mayo, only better tasting)
Salt and pepper to taste

Microwave the rice for one minute, add to bowl of chili and mix together. Microwave the bowl of chili and rice for 1 further minute, then add 2 teaspoons of Vegan Dressing and mix together. Add salt and pepper to taste.

It's surprisingly good, IMO.
