Typically the whole family is in the living room, but some might be watching their iPad or on their phone so there is a lot of competing noise. I found it helps me focus on what I’m watching.

I don't allow it in my home. If we're watching television in the family room, no one can watch something different on a device. Well, they can watch it, but they can't turn the sound up. Ditto when we're driving -- no one can emit sound from any device. We all listen to what's on the automobile's stereo -- not that I choose what is playing be it music/talk radio, but we all share in the communal experience of traveling/listening/conversing together. It's just fairly recently that I allowed them to put on headphones during drives. Some of my brother's son's peers look askance when they ride with us for the first time and I tell them to turn off the sound on whatever they're listening to ... but they turn the sound off.
