The Concert Thread

Concert thread? Whaaaaat? There's no concerts, right?
Actually mulling today about an old concert from my youth.

So listening to 1985 today which was the year of Live Aid - no I didn't go to JFK in Philly. Watched on MTV at home
However I did the next year go to one of the Conspiracy of Hope concerts done on behalf of Amnesty International. A series of 6 concerts in June 1986. There I was with a couple of friends at Giants Stadium NJ for this all day show. How did I get tickets - who the heck knows?

Was texting the friend that I went to today - as I looked up the concert details, it amazing the things I remember and the things I don't. U2 and the reunion of The Police for that concert - absolutely. Bryan Adams and Lou Reed....hmmmm, vague recollection.
Actually remember groups like Third World and Ruben Blades with Santana and Fela (the last I didn't know at all)
Also remember a special taped message from Pete Townshend who couldn't make it because of his father's illness (and I remember some jerks booing)

But then I read about the other acts:
Remembered Peter Gabriel on the program but can't remember any of his set
Miles Davis?? Whaaaaat? Did I see him - wow what an awesome experience that I completely don't remember
Yoko Ono singing "Imagine"?
Joni Mitchell coming on in place of Townshend???

How can memory be so selective? (no I don't need an answer but it's indeed vexing)

For years, I would wear my sweatshirt from the concert all the time as it slowly faded. Man, wish I still had that.

Here's a decent blog about another guy who was there and clearly recalls more

Great memory, Zeeb. It's like Woodstock. If you remember it, you weren't there. :worm:

I read the linked article.

I hope the Dweeb wasn't Zeeb.

P. S. I know you wouldn't do that; your neurons are aligned properly, so that you wouldn't be an ice-hurling moron.

Just got home from this.
Branford Marsalis - Baldwin Auditorium 22APR2022 - 01.jpg
Branford Marsalis quartet at Duke's magnificent Baldwin Auditorium. This was the encore when the band was joined onstage by the Jazz director of NC Central University, a fantastic HBCU where my father graduated, returned to teach, and created the first African-American History class at the university. The band was also joined for the encore by pianist's Joey Calderazzo's son who helped his father tickle the keys.

My daughter bailed on me at the last second, so I got to stretch my legs across and really enjoy the show.

Now I'm debating whether to get tix to the Naz + Wu-Tang Clan show coming to the area in September. I'm hesitant because I'd really want to go with my son, but he'll be in college in Ohio at that time. I know he'd love it, but not sure about spending the $ to fly him back to NC a couple of weeks after taking him there for the opening of classes at the end of August.

Went to Brooklyn over the weekend ostensibly to see A10 Conference Basketball Tourney at the Barclay Center, but it was mostly to get a 1:1 trip with my son. Now that they're older, trying to get some 1:1 trips with each of them. Or at the least, separate trips for him and for the two girls.

I was more excited to catch at least one show while in New York and was astounded by my good luck when Ben Wendel was announced for our trip dates about 10 days before the show. We were even more astounded that the guitarist for the set would be Julian Lage who IMO is one of the top 3 technically accomplished guitarist in Jazz today. He's probably my son's favorite. Unfortunately, Julian got called away a couple of days before the 5-day run began and two replacements were called up to split the dates. We got Nir Felder. My son was disappointed, but I knew Nir is talented and was happy to have him fill in. During the show, Nir was great and my son didn't mind the switch after all.

As seen in the pic, we were right in front of the stage. My feet were on the stage for most of the show. At the end of one great song, I turned to my son and said "Fuck yeah!" apparently a little too loud because the band smiled and laughed.

Twelve years ago, I bought four tix to the then newly combined Tedeschi Trucks Band. The Susan Tedeschi Band and the Derek Trucks Band had separately been touring in small venues up to about a thousand seats, and often much smaller. The combined band was a bigger draw and began playing in larger venues, up to 3K or 5K seats or larger. I'd planned to take my then 9yo son, my brother who was visiting in town, and his 12yo daughter. My brother, not a live music guy, begged off. I took a friend whom I thought might enjoy such a show -- ironically he told me afterwards that he was lukewarm about attending because he found Trucks albums to that point to be a little boring and he didn't know who Tedeschi was. My niece was also dubious once she and her mother mis-realized it was a no-name R&R band. Naturally, we all loved theTedeschi Trucks Band at DPAC - 28MAR2023.jpgDerek Trucks and Bill - 28MAR2023.jpg show and my friend because a TTBand devotee and has seen them play at least twice since, and has all their albums.

Wanting to return the favor of a dozen years ago, he asked me to the TTBand show in the same venue I'd introduced him to the band. As he went to the venue in the late afternoon, hours before the show, to pick up the tickets, he met Derek outside and got a quick picture with him. He also met Susan a few minutes later, didn't recognize her, and asked "hey, you coming also to pick up your tickets to tonight's show." Then it slowly dawned on him and he said, "Oh, you're Susan, aren't you?" And he was then too embarrassed to ask for a selfie with her.

Unfortunately, he'd gotten the tix from his son-in-law and the miscreant had purchased tickets in nearly the last row. And they were obstructed view to boot. Fortunately, my deviant mind saw a solution and twenty minutes into the 2+hour show, I'd secured us "Lincoln seats" in the side balcony, a lot closer to stage.

And, as the saying goes, a great time was had by all!

Last night, JazzySon and I went to a virtually Standing Room Only venue to see virtuoso Jazz guitarist Julian Lage and longtime bassist Jorge Roeder.

I knew seating would be highly limited and planned to arrive two hours early to ensure a chair AND front row viewing. Motorco is a large multi-section bar/restaurant/live music venue and we'd have ways to not be bored prior to the show. JazzySon had other ideas and, repeatedly reminded of my plans, four hours before the show announced he was going across town to play basketball. Predictably, we did not arrive 2 hours early.

Searching for parking, we crawled by the venue 50 minutes prior to the show and saw a long line of people (who had presumably arrived much earlier) slowly being allowed in. By the time I found a spot and we walked back, it was 30 minutes to showtime and no chairs were available. After fortifying myself with an IPA, I talked the keeper of the chairs into giving us two fold up chairs (because of my bad back and JazzySon's vertigo, wink wink). We didn't get stage front seating, but we were close enough.

During the show, JazzySon made several references about Lage being the "Micheal Jordan of guitars" or the "Mike Tyson of guitars." Sometimes, he simply said, "Yeah, he's got the goods" or "He's talented" with the awe he normally reserves for Steph Curry. We both have wanted to see Julian for a long time. We thought we'd see him in Brooklyn in March playing with Ben Wendel, but Julian got called to Brazil at the last moment. JazzySon counted seeing Julian as one of the must-see events of his life.

It was cool hearing Julian emit groans and hums like Keith Jarrett. Or sometimes, he'd just laugh because he was so happy in the act of playing. He smiled widely for most of the show, and it was hard to not be infected with his joy. I also now have newfound respect for Roeder - the man can flat out play!

I started recording a clip at the beginning of what turned out to be the final song (not counting the encore.) As it turned out, I got the entire 5 minutes of the song. Probably too long to post here. Maybe I'll get it up on YouTube (what would be a first YT video post for me, so we'll see) and link to it.

Excuse the blurry pics with my crappy pic phone. If I ever get the video posted, it will be infinitely better quality because I used JazzySon's phone for that.

Listening to this now and loving it.
Julian is full of ideas, isn’t he? Truly creates his own sonic universe. Thanks Randy!
Glad you like it. I got that earlier this year and really like it. My introduction to Julian was with the album Gladwell, sort of a conception album about a fictional little town. Me and the kids listened to that one a lot driving between three schools mornings and afternoons at the time. Of course, having an album cover of him sitting in an elegant private library with floor-to-ceiling books was a good way to get my attention.

"Full of ideas" is the perfect description for what listening to him feels like.

My firstborn saw Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service at the Hollywood Bowl. They played all of Transatlanticism and Give Up.

Fun facts: "And I didn't realize that a) Ben Gibbard plays the drums (and well), and b) that Jenny Lewis was the backup vocals for the Postal Service, and she was performing at the show."
