What Are You Listening To? August 2019

Mine own self listened last night.

You can say that, again. Five times, in fact.

My copy reveals that I picked this up at Cheap Thrills on 6/14/14. For those who don't know, and even for those who do, this establishment is in the old neighborhood of San Luis Obispo, not far from Cal Poly SLO. Whenever I had a hearing or two up in SLO, I would make it a point afterwards to look for used CDs (honestly don't think I ever bought a used LP there), before I began the trip back to Orange County. This was a five-hour trek by car through Central California, with occasional glimpses of the Pacific, until I turned inland at Ventura to start the mind-numbing drive around Los Angeles. In Ventura, I would stop in at Salzer's, another new and used CD emporium. I am sure that Sam from Ojai is quite familiar with this place.

Ah... those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end.
Over the past few days, I have been reminiscing my days of visiting used CD shoppes. Those were magical glorious times. Hunting, finding, then cruising around listening to my new discoveries.

Tom Harrell - Roman Nights (2010)

Harrell had a run of albums for a decade where he used the same lineup (mostly) and the albums all had the same "sound". Instead of wearing out its welcome, that sound was so damn good that every album was (and still is) welcomed by my ears. It is bouncy, happy, well-composed music open to improvisation. This really is a crack band that cooks smoking hot Jazz.

Word to the wise: Since there are fewer used CD shoppes, you can find these little gems at local library bookstore sales and thrift shops.

Support the alternate markets!

At a certain point, it was illegal to sell used CDs for money in Florida. I don't know what the status is now.

@axolotl might enjoy this wide ranging survey of modern classical, from Scriabin to Toch to Webern to Busoni. Amazing stuff.
