Christophe Coin - Marais: Suitte d'un Gout Etranger (composed 1717, recorded 1998)
One often thinks of baroque instrumentals, especially from France, as little more than leisurely background music to amuse the upper classes without distracting them too much. However, these compositions from Marin Marais demand close listening. Like his contemporary, Francois Couperin, Marais injected his pieces with exotic Italian stylistic effects from across the Alps.
Christophe Coin is one of the preeminent players and conductors in the "historically informed" school. Gramophone Magazine sez:
