La Santa Cecelia - Noche Y Citas (2013)

R-15050909-1586020519-9697.jpeg.jpg

Although Brooklyn based Pistolera seems to have backed away from recording, La Santa Cecelia from Los Angeles has stepped up admirably to fill the gap. The band's website tells us:

La Santa Cecilia exemplifies the modern-day creative hybrid of Latin culture, rock and world music. The group draws inspiration from all over the world, utilizing Pan-American rhythms including cumbia, bossa-nova, rumba, bolero, tango, jazz and klezmer music. Their unique sounds and the experience of their colorful, passionate performances continues to captivate both loyal fans and new listeners. Named after the patron saint of music, La Santa Cecilia is composed of accordionist and requinto player Jose ‘Pepe’ Carlos, bassist Alex Bendaña, percussionist Miguel ‘Oso’ Ramirez, and vocalist ‘La Marisoul.’

As with Pistolera, for me the band's strong female vocalist carries the day. "La Marisoul" is a force of nature: angry, soulful, romantic, she can do it all.

Pink Floyd - DSOTM (1973, 2021 HiRes)

I've been going through this phenomenon in the last 10 years where the sound quality of this album kept sounding worse and worse. That is, until this release. This sounds very close to what I heard on a CD version when I was 16 years old, using an entry level Sony CD player into a Technics receiver going to Radio Shack Optimus speakers. Without a doubt, my 16 year old ears were much better, and I would say the CD version still has the edge.

Yes, I know it's weird that I have a memory of what something sounded like when I was 16.

Berlin Philharmonic & Berlin Radio Symphony (Sergiu Celibidache, cond.) - Purcell: King Arthur et al. (1945)

640x640.jpg

I could write a doctoral thesis about the confluence of time, place, conductor, orchestra and repertoire reflected in this seemingly humble gray market CD. The short take is that Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache took over the Berlin Phil after the fall of Hitler. Wilhelm Furtwangler, who led the orchestra during the war was busy defending himself against bogus charges that he was a Nazi.

These radio recordings deliver the majestic music from Purcell's overlooked opera with all the melancholy mordancy one would expect in Berlin during the winter of 1945.

New London Consort (Philip Pickett, cond.) - Susato: Dansereye (comp. 1551 , rec. 1993)

R-14803254-1581890948-4232.jpeg.jpg

Delightful collection of 38 Flemish dance pieces. Susato was the first music publisher in Antwerp and is thought to have aggregated these folkish works rather than actually composing them. I couldn't resist sharing the incredible instrumentation employed here. This is one of the few Renaissance collections I've heard that is highly enjoyable on its own terms rather than being simply of historical interest.
