Steve Coleman & the Five Elements - Live At The Village Vanguard: Vol 1 (The Embedded Sets) (2018) disc 1 of 2

I really like Steve Coleman's music, but I 100% love the idea of his musical journey/inspiration/goals/attempts/most-past-albums-available-free-on-his-website. The problem I have is the "100% Love" is consistently disappointed that the actual "music" part never lives up to its potential. I always like his work, usually I love at least one track (usually more) on each album, but never actually love an entire album.

Looking back through RYM, I notice I have never rated any album by him at more than 4 stars. That feels strange. :meh:

The good news is, I like this album. The disappointing news is, I don't love it.

Never fear. I will listen to it, and check your perceptions. :worm:

Alash ~ Buura (2011)

Music with Tuvan throat-singing.

C'mon, you know you want to try it.

Pegi Young - Raw (2017)

Pegi's recent death inspired me to play her last recording. She released this relentlessly painful album after Neil left her for Daryl Hannah. The songs, mostly written by Pegi tell the story: "Why", "Gave My Best To You," "Trying To Live My Life Without You", "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?", etc. There is also a cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" that the word "downbeat" doesn't even begin to describe. Her band, The Survivors, is led by Muscle Shoals keyboard legend Spooner Oldham. They lend a punchy, rocking sound with a bit of twang that backs the material sympathetically.

I can't imagine the pain Pegi endured when her 36 year marriage ended so I really wanted to like this record. But it suffers from two insurmountable defects. First, her voice is a very limited instrument, better suited to harmony than lead. More fundamentally, it takes genius to make a whole album full of recrimination succeed as art. Marianne Faithfull pulled it off with Broken English. Sadly, Pegi didn't with Raw. Her primal scream sharing of unremitting sorrow, anger and pain are not an experience I will ever repeat.
