Art Farmer/Benny Golson - Meet the Jazztet (1960)

Wonderful album - I'm glad it came up in the 1960 discussion the other day. Reminded me it had been a while. Though it lasted only 3 years (in its initial incarnation) and is not as well known now compared with, say, Clifford Brown-Max Roach's or Art Blakey's groups, the Jazztet was a tremendously tight hard bop ensemble. Some smooth ballads on this one (including the homage to brown "I Remember Clifford") but, man, could these guys blow too. Benny Golson especially is out of sight. Check out "Avalon" which doesn't even get into the recognizable melody of the old 1920s Al Jolson song until a killer sax workout.

Sam Jones - The Soul Society (1960)

Feeling jazzy so why not
Interestingly, last album had a cover of the Al Jolson song "Avalon" and this one has a cover of his song "Sonny Boy". Can't say Jolie's songs are often covered in the jazz realm so to hear them back-to-back in the 1960s hard bop era is kind of atypical (but cool too).
Less daring than The Jazztet but more swinging - might not be as adventurous as many other 60s jazz albums but a lot of cool fun:cool:

Forgot my digital copy of this album is an odd mixture of Jones' first three albums (including The Chant and Down Home) oddly with the tracks mixed. "Sonny Boy" is on Jone's second album. Still good stuff
