Stan Kenton - 1950 (Classics 2001)

Stan cut these 17 tracks over a span of just 3 days in February 1950. They represented the debut of his "Innovations In Modern Music" orchestra: 22 pieces plus 16 strings, a second percussionist and June Christy. The results are every bit as amazing as you would expect from a group with Maynard Ferguson, Bud Shank, Shorty Rogers, Art Pepper, Laurindo Almeida and Shelly Manne. The sound has a definite South American flavor but defies categorization. Hearing these songs together in chronological order sure beats chasing down the 78 RPM album, 2 LPs, 2 EP's and half dozen singles on which they originally appeared.

Playlist: music of 1970

Most of the usual suspects

Had never heard Marvin Gaye's version of "Abraham, Martin, and John" nor Shirley Bassey's cover of The Beatles "Something"
Had completely forgot about R. Dean Taylor's "Indiana Wants Me"
None are particularly essential but interesting

I remember "Indiana Wants Me" only as a trivia answer related to a short list of bubblegum pop music songs with names of states in the title.

P.S. Another would be "Arizona" by Mark Lindsay, if anybody cares.
