Exene Cervenka - Running Sacred (1990)

MS5qcGVn.jpeg

Exene's second solo outing has a lot to recommend it. She put away her avant garde poetry in favor of 11 witty if dark, tightly written songs and an equally dark Hazel Dickens cover ("Will Jesus Wash The Bloodstains From Your Hands"). John Dee Graham, Tony Gilkyson and John Doe provide a semi-twangy noir vibe that splits the difference between X and The Knitters.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter.

She thought she wanted to die.
But she wasn't certain.
She didn't call it the facts of life.
She didn't call it curtains.

Yesterday (as usual) and today - been going through 9 hours of my 1966 Playlist

While my wife is always amazed I can make such a long playlist out of a single year (and is skeptical of the consistent quality of the material), these years are just so solid

I mean it is the year of Revolver, Pet Sounds, and Blonde on Blonde
Plus The Byrds, Supremes, The Kinks, Four Tops, Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & The Papas, and a lot of great Stones stuff

But hey don't forget "Solitary Man" by Neil Diamond, The Hollies "Bus Stop", Dusty's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", and Temptations "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "I Know I'm Losing You"
The soundtrack of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Ike & Tina's "River Deep-Mountain High"
Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood"
Easybeats "Friday On My Mind"
Outsiders "Time Won't Let Me"
Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1000 Dances"
The Who's "Happy Jack" (I saw ya!) and "I'm A Boy" ("My name is Bill and I'm a head case!")
Jimi's "Hey Joe"
Sinatra's "Strangers In the Night"
Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)"
Love's "My Little Red Book"
Herman's Hermits "No Milk Today"
Donovan's "Season of the Witch"
Loretta Lynn's "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind)"
Paul Butterfield's Blues Band "East-West"
Nina Simone's "Wild Is The Wind"

I mean....c'mon!

Lalo Schifrin - The Cincinnati Kid (soundtrack 1965)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

This early Lalo Schifrin film music (I think it's his second score, following the soundtrack to Rhino!) hints strongly at his future greatness with pulsating jazzy rhythms and a blockbuster Ray Charles title song.
