Lafayette Gilchrist - Soul Progressin' _2011_

AllAboutJazz said:
Baltimore pianist Lafayette Gilchrist has a style which satisfyingly combines two very different aesthetics: the funky and the sophisticated. He's been compared to keyboardists and composers Andrew Hill and Sun Ra, but his approach is more closely rooted in bassist Charles Mingus' work as a leader.

Freddie Hubbard - Breaking Point _1964_

Outstanding! (have we gotten to '64 in the GM thread yet?)
AllMusicGuide said:
The pure energy Hubbard injected into this ensemble, and the sheer originality of this music beyond peers like Miles Davis and Lee Morgan, identified Hubbard as the newest of new voices on his instrument. Breaking Point has stood the test of time as a recording far ahead of mid-'60s post-bop, and is an essential item for all listeners of incendiary progressive jazz.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind (box set) - The River (single disc)

Now 152 songs in, the Chronological Bruce Springsteen continues. Just finished his 1980 album The River and following that by the "Single Disc" River, which Bruce released Dec 2015 with this collection. Essentially The River started out as a single disc but he retooled it using different cuts, different versions entirely of other songs then expanded it to two discs with more songs. Bruce fanatics primarily find it interesting to see the original one-disc concept as a window into the process of creating music. Still, I suspect all agree the final double album was the better decision though there are some outtakes (especially "Loose End") which stayed unreleased for years (though performed live) which are better than some of the cuts that made the album.
