Meshell Ndegeocello - The Spirit Music Jamia: Dance Of The Infidel(2005)
Meshell puts forth her earnest effort at a Jazz album. Mostly, her efforts are restricted to building the team, inspiring the team, composing a bit. She soes play bass on a couple of tracks, but we hear only her vision (from her) on the remainder.
She recruited bonafied Jazz musicians in Oliver Lake, Don Byron, Wallace Roney, Ron Blake, Kenny Garrett, Jack De Johnette and others. She invites Jazz vocalists like Cassandra Wilson and Jazzy vocalists like Lalah Hathaway to pitch in on a couple of tracks.
Kenny Cox - Introducing Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet(1969)
It's a shame that this band, which includes the younger brother of Joe Henderson, didn't manage to find success. This is a very competent album, and this band could have had a very rewarding (to listeners) career.
EDIT: This CD actually includes both the album pictured and their follow-up, "Multidirection".
Both are very enjoyable. I think I should leave this out on the "play" table so I can remember to listen to it a few more times over the next couple of weeks. I want to get to know this better.
