Laurent Voulzy ~ Saisons [2-CD Compilation] (2003)

French Pop, Bossa Nova, Baroque Pop, Folk Pop

Here, you hadn't even heard of Laurent Voulzy, and now you need a compilation album of his.

Some of these tunes remind me of early Kinks, and a veritable handful remind of Styx, probably because Voulzy's voice hits the registers inhabited by Dennis DeYoung.

The clip above ("Rockcollection") has snippets of different pop songs than the (apparently-truncated) version on Saisons.

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - A Day With Art Blakey 1961 Volume 1 (recorded 1961, released 1981)

According to the sticker on the case, I bought this from a great local used book/cd store. It started near a university and served the college-age crowd, then grew to two neighboring cities that had colleges (UNC, Duke, NCSU.) I visited all three stores -- at one time, I visited all three fairly regularly as I hunted used CDs and used books in my 20s. I have no idea from which store I bought this. I bought hundreds of CDs+books from those stores across 20+ years.

I became acquainted with the owner over the years and we'd talk business when I stopped in and the day was slow. He struggled in the beginning, was comfortable in the middle but busy managing three locations, and ready to retire a few years ago. He sold the "business" and inventory of the stores to employees at two locations, but maintained ownership of the buildings. A couple of years later, in the Durham location, he NNN-rented the building to a pizza chain and is doing very well from that alone.

He was a really cool dude. Several times, over the last couple of years he owned the stores, he invited me to bring my family to hang out with him and his family. It never seemed like a good time (from my side) and we never met outside his stores. I wish we could have. It would be cool to have a cool acquaintance like that.

It's funny what comes to mind from seeing a sticker on a CD.
