I always assumed that "Lemuria" was a country ruled either by small primates or sarong-wearing actresses. Wiki set me straight:

Lemuria is the name of a now-discredited 19th century scientific theory which posited a "lost land" located either in the Indian or the Pacific Ocean. The idea was then adopted by the occultists of the time and consequently has been incorporated into pop culture.
