Nas - I Am ... (1999)
While driving to Winston Salem to visit Wake Forest University, Winston Salem State University, and NC School Of The Arts. JazzyJr and I listened to a little Hip Hop. It's nice to get to visit very different universities on a single trip. And this was an especially diverse trio of schools.
and we wrapped up the journey with ... Boogie Down Productions - Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop(1989)
Unfortunately, my method of self-guided college tours hit its first snag yesterday. Each university was completely deserted and every building locked up (well, we did get into one of the athletic department buildings at WF which was cool) because of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. We walked the campuses and got a good look, but did not get to speak to a single person at any of the campuses. We saw two security guards at WF, a handful of landscapers at WSSU, and one student-aged guy at NCSotA. JazzyJr liked what he saw on each campus (he especially liked the "Broadway St" section of the NC School of the Arts, though he is adamant about not attending any school with <1000 students) but said he needed to see students to get a better feel of each campus.
Oh well, at least Winston Salem is close enough to visit again.
back to the present ... John Coltrane - Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album(recorded 1963, released 2018)
With most unreleased albums, I'm more appreciative of the find than enraptured with the music. Being more familiar with Coltrane's music makes this a "find" of a different beast. It really feels like "new" music from the vault -- not just a random selection of unreleased songs that mark the era but don't feel necessary. This album actually feels like a missing album from Coltrane's oeuvre. It feels like a group of songs meant to be played and listened to together.
David Binney - Free To Dream(1999)
Binney is one of my favorite living saxophonists. Immensely talented, exhuberant compositions, joyful playing. He's definitely one of the musicians on my must-see-live list.
ASIDE and appropos of nothing: I'd love to hear Binney in a band with Ambrose Akinmusire, David Gilmore, Ari Hoenig, Joshua Redman, David Murray, Ben Goldberg and Vijay Iyer. Just idle fantasizing.
EDIT: This really is a dream front line. It's ______ that I mentioned a couple of posts ago that I'd like to hear Akinmusire in a lineup with Binney, then the next CD I pick to listen to actually has those two together.
a brain freeze prevents me from filling in that blank.
Stefon Harris - Sonic Creed(2018)
Truly the next step on the ladder from grampa Lionel, daddy Milt, uncle Hutch, and cousin Roy. In fact, Harris took over the vibraphone chair from Hutcherson in the SFJazz Collective.
