R.E.M. - Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011 (comp 2011)

Why am I listening to a "greatest hits" package by a group which was known for its consistently outstanding albums? Four reasons:

- this package was announced in 2011 at the same time the group announced its breakup
- it covers R.EM.'s entire career which spanned two record labels
- there are three new songs unavailable elsewhere
- perhaps most importantly, it was compiled by the group for the express purpose of serving as its epitaph

Hearing all of R.E.M.'s big songs together makes me appreciate just what a powerhouse the group really was. The new songs in this Document Reveal that they were still a creative Monster, not Out Of Time at all, with many great songs left unsung.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Yeah, one of the lies was that they promised they would originally break up before the year 2000.

R.E.M. were one of my favorite groups growing up. Still love the first six albums and some of the rest.

Well, I wouldn’t say they did their best work after 2000 but at least they were still relevant.

They played at my college in 1982. I was a dj at the time and was part of the welcoming committee for them. They played in our convo hall, with Let's Active as the warm up band, and then after the show we pig-piled into a friend's truck and drove down to the "packy" to buy a keg, which we drove back up to our dorm and drank in the hall with them. Just a bunch of regular, cool guys who were in a band at the time.
We had no idea they would make it big. Too bad Let's Active didn't as well. Truth be told, I liked them better than REM at the time of the show.

She better not hit him or she'll be charged with mallets aforethought.

I know why these guys never caught on. The lead singer sounds like a chipmunk. It's too bad they weren't successful, because the music is very good.
