The Essential Benny Goodman

A nice 40-track compilation that covers all the highlights of Goodman's wonderful career including small group sessions.

Muddy Waters Blues Band - Mud In Your Ear (Muse 1973)

Muse Records specialized in jazz but did release this compilation of songs from some 1967 sessions cut by Alan Douglas. The Mud Man produced and played but didn't sing for contractual reasons. His band at the time were definitely stars in their own right:

Drums – Francis Clay
Guitar – Sammy Langhorne
Guitar, Vocals – Luther Johnson
Harmonica, Vocals – George "Mojo" Buford
Piano – Otis Spann

Great stuff.

EDIT: Actually, this is NOT the Muse comp but a different selections of tracks from the same sessions, some on Muse and some not. I see another Vinyl Rip of the Day in my future.
I know of Sammy Langhorne (somewhat) and Otis Spann (Fathers & Sons), but I sought context for Luther Johnson.

In disambiguation from Wiki,
Luther Johnson (born April 11, 1939, Itta Bena, Mississippi) is an American Chicago blues singer and guitarist, who performs under the name Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. He is not to be confused with Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson, Luther "Houserocker" Johnson, from Atlanta; or Lonnie "Guitar Junior" Brooks.

Together these two turned in an album far superior to most of their solo efforts. To be honest, I don't recall this one from back in the day but some really nice person on Music Boomerang sent it as a bonus.

^ Wow! Never even heard of that one before. Cass Elliot had such a tender voice. I should look for that one.

I will never forget, as a youngster, hearing "Creque Alley" where they sing "When Cass was a Sophmore, planned to go to Swarthmore, but she changed her mind one daaaaaaay!" wha, wha, whaaaat?:banana::banana: The Kremlin on the Crum is immortalized in song!!

Hat tip to Richard Nixon

Had no idea this existed. Must find a way to hear it.

Anthony Davis & James Newton - Hidden Voices (India Navigation 1979)

R-2198390-1269893829.jpeg.jpg

AMG's Scott Yanow sez:

Pianist Anthony Davis, flutist James Newton, trombonist George Lewis, bassist Rick Rozie and drummer Pheeroan akLaff make for a potent and very exploratory team on a set of originals by Davis and Newton. The music is quite unpredictable and free in spots, yet does not neglect the use of melody and space. Thought-provoking performances.

It's not really as weird as Scotty suggests. The CD is well worth tracking down.

The above Zippyshare link should play the complete album. It works in Chrome and Internet Explorer but apparently not in Firefox or Safari. If you have problems, please post in the Bugs thread or PM me.
