Buck White toiled for years in the musical wilderness before he and his family achieved success as "The Whites". This largely instrumental album features Buck on piano and mandolin, daughters Cheryl and Sharon along with all stars Ricky Skaggs (Sharon's husband), Jerry Douglas, David Grisman, Tony Rice and Sam Bush. With all this talent, the vibe is that of a low key acoustic jam in the back yard on a Sunday afternoon. Grab a glass of lemonade, sit back and listen.
Another year, another new band for John Mayall, now a resident of Laurel Canyon. This one represented a real change in direction. He created an all-American group by taking Harvey Mandel and Larry Taylor from Canned Heat and adding Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin. The result is an innovative album in a rhythmic, bluesy groove that doesn't suffer at all for the absence of a drummer. Mayall's understated vocals suit the loping beat perfectly, while the violin of Harris adds colorful punctuation.
Charlotte Mundy & Christopher Goddard - Connie's Piano Songs: The Art Songs Of Elizabeth "Connie" Converse (2013)
If you aren't familiar with the unbelievable story of Connie Converse, there is some info here that will doubtless lead you down a large rabbit hole from which you may never escape.
Though she disappeared decades ago, her songs seem eerily prescient today, expressing our ache and ambivalence.

This is my second album of Connie's songs. This one contains songs she wrote during the second phase of her songwriting endeavors, after she learned to play the piano. She never recorded these so Charlotte Mundy and Christopher Goddard brought her written manuscripts to life with the aid of Connie's brother, Phil Converse, and Adam Fishman, her tireless biographer.
You have never heard songs like these. It's as if she had her own private muse.
