Rich Szabo - Best Of Both Worlds (1981)

Vinyl Spin Of The Day.

Recently a kind Discogs seller threw this in as a bonus. If anyone ever tells you "you can't get something for nothing", don't believe them. This is a terrific record! Beautifully arranged, executed and recorded big band jazz. Rich's website sez:

Rich Szabo was born in Newark, New Jersey, March 16, 1956. The fiery trumpet star began studying his instrument at the age of nine. As a teenager he dreamed of playing with his idol, Maynard Ferguson. Upon his completion of his musical studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rich's dream was fulfilled when he was asked to join the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra.

After serving his internship with Maynard, Rich went back to his home in the New York City Metro Area and assembled some of the finest musicians to create one of the most exciting big bands in the country today.

Rich and the band have been playing to sold out audiences across the country. Whether it be a concert, dance or intimate jazz room, Rich Szabo will knock you out!

Rich has played in the bands of Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Ray Anthony, Billy May, Tito Puente, Larry Elgart, Sammy Kaye, Xavier Cugat, Sonny Costanzo, Buddy Childers, Charli Persip, Charlie Ventura, New Jersey Pops and can be seen and heard on PBS playing lead trumpet with Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians.

He has performed or recorded with The Four Freshman, The Four Lads, The Chordettes, Steve Martin, The GrassRoots, Frankie Valli, Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Johnny Desmond, Keely Smith, Margaret Whiting, Leslie gore, Regis Philbin, Joan rivers, Robert Klein, Lou Christy, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Allen & Rossi, Melissa Manchester, Natalie Cole just to mention a few.

The 21 piece  band blow hard and soft with equal facility. Five different arrangers work from this colorful musical palette, so there is lots of variety As a bonus, we get two jazzy vocals from Anne Roselli.

Rich has only released two albums, one of which (not this one, unfortunately) goes for $72.98 on Amazon. Best Of Both Worlds can be had for under $10 and is a real bargain at the price.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. I've never heard better contemporary big band jazz.

Angular Russian music from a composer who once wrote a cello concerto scored for 48 cellos, 12 double-basses and percussion. These pieces are occasionally perverse but never dull.

Bob Gluck ~ Stories Heard and Retold (1998)

Critic Seth Rogovoy (Berkshire Eagle), describes "Stories Heard and Retold" as "A thought-provoking combination of musique concrète techniques, found-sounds, ambient recordings and Gluck's own compositions and electronic manipulations, the album functions as a kind of soundscape of Jewish life..."
