What are you listening to? September 2017

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1985)

How do those half-speed remasters sound in relation to the original releases? Better, yeah. But how so? Or more?

Jolie Holland & Samantha Parton - Wildflowers (2017)

Two of the founding members of The Be Good Tanyas return with an outstanding album in the alt country-contemporary folk vein. RIYL Cowboy Junkies or Lucinda Williams before she became so angry.

Spotify wisely recommended this based on my listening habits.

The soundstaging and isolation is exceptional. The high frequency elements, in particular, are Next Level when compared to original vinyl. The originals plumbed new sonic depths and it was difficult for me to expect much improvement. I've been blown away. The clarity is beyond belief. I did note a couple of drop outs on Tiger Mountain, but its a minor quibble.

Great to hear. And since "Before and After Science" is in my Top 5 albums of all time, it seems I am going to have to order that pronto.

Valerie June - The Order of Time (2017)

Second album from the eclectic Memphis singer-songwriter. VJ is very hard to pigeonhole but her style runs such diverse elements as blues, country, folk and pop through a dreamy blender a la Don Was.

Highly recommended...and it's on Spotify!

Various Artists - Passion (2002)

AMG sez:

This disc travels the world seeking music that will convey that most primal of emotions: passion. Some of the various sounds the CD-compilers came up with are Portuguese fado, Gregorian chant, Indian ghazals, Sufi chanting, and soukous. Some of the more well-known artists here are the Klezmatics (who play klezmer) o_O and ¡Cubanismo! (who play up-tempo Cuban music). At over 60 minutes long, Passion works very well as a sampler of various styles of world music and could be a very nice first purchase for someone looking to do some exploring.
