Leo Kottke ~ Instrumentals: The Best of the Capitol Years [Compilation] (2003)

The man is a prodigious talent on guitar, as Nick can attest.

One of the things that I like best about traveling to cities and towns hours away is that I can rifle through their Goodwills, Salvation Armies, and other high-class thrift stores and come away with new old CD merchandise. On a recent foray for business to beautiful Palmdale, I found this and the other CD compilation of his. At the time, I already owned one of them, and I did not know that there were two compilations with identical covers on different colored backgrounds: The Best of the Chrysalis Years and The Best of the Capitol Years. I bought both copies with the idea that I would ship both out online via the usual culprits. Later, I made the discovery that the two were different, although one is not better than the other, or worse. Both are stellar.

Well, that's more than anyone needed or wanted to know, but we are trying to write a little something about albums we enjoy. That's what I done did.

Calexico - The Thread That Keeps Us

Indie or Alternative rock - I always forget the difference. Southwestern tinged, often a bit noir, but not always. A nice album full of pleasant melodies and moods. At 22 tracks (yet still only 1:07 run time) it's a bit much to digest all at once but I enjoyed it.

Calexico - Spiritoso

Some studio tracks but mostly live recordings from a few shows, including performances with the Radio Symphonieorchester Wien and Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. The orchestras add to the drama of the more theatrical songs, but go far from taking them over. It's still very much driven by the band. Very enjoyable.

The Beatles - Past Masters, Vol.1

Been quiet on the musical posting over the past day. Saw the McCartney interview on 60 Minutes and got into one of my Beatles moods
So yesterday it was Please Please Me through Rubber Soul. Now this, next up Revolver then onward. The whole shebang
