Random Food Thoughts

Here’s a blast from the past I just discovered: the NYT review of Guy Fieri’s late, unlamented Times Square eatery:

This is worth reading for its pure snarkiness. Guess the Mafia is not the only Manhattan organization that offers hit jobs. :scared:

Very interesting. It's a totally different business model for franchising: the company makes franchises cheap but hard to qualify for.

"Unlike other franchise models, Chick-fil-A — not the franchisee — covers nearly the entire cost of opening each new restaurant (which, according to its financial disclosures, runs from $343k to $2m). The franchisee only pays the $10k franchise fee. Chick-fil-A pays for (and retains ownership of) everything — real estate, equipment, inventory — and in return, it takes a MUCH bigger piece of the pie."

Eyeroll Tuesday Not-Entirely-Random Thought

I was at KFC a short while ago, ordering dinner for my son and me.

An older gentleman (perhaps my age) came in after me and asked the clerk for some odd number of #7 joints. The clerk politely asked, "What would you like? What was your order, again?" The man replied, "You work in a chicken place, and you don't know what the 7-joint is?"

People, there are all kinds of numbers on the KFC menu board. Way too many to be a smart-ass know-it-all.

The customer is not always right. Even I wanted to cuff the dude.

Somebody gave me a toaster oven. So far, I really don't like it. It has a tendency to make toast way too dry and crispy. I think my Kitchen Aid toaster works better. Plus, it has a bagel setting, so I can toast hamburger buns in it.

The toaster oven will probably go into storage.

I use mine all the time instead of the oven. I cook chicken breasts, pork loin and bacon in it and reheat all kinds of leftovers. I figure that little thing saves me all kinds of energy over heating the entire oven. For bagels I use the broil option to only toast them on the open side.

I quit taking my reflux medicine a couple years ago. I decided to fix my diet instead of taking pills. Lately it's been harder to control so I'm down to one (large) cup of coffee a day. I switched to cold brew, which has helped a lot.

Nonetheless, on these cold winter days I like a hot drink, and so am looking for alternatives to a second or third cup of coffee. Tea isn't doing it. It's just too thin and doesn't replace coffee. Any ideas on good teas that are hearty enough to take the place of coffee? I'm on Earl Gray now. It's close, but not quite.

This may not be immediately responsive, but there's little better than some Earl Gray.

It has been one of my favorite instrumentals for a very long time.

Have you ever had AeroPress coffee? It's much less acidic than drip coffee.

For a strong, flavorful pot of tea, look no further than Assam. It steeps a bit longer than regular black tea and you get a dark tea that has hints of caramel and raisins in the bouquet. One of my favorites.
