Darren Hayman - 12 Astronauts (2019)

Lately have been a bit directionless with musical listening. Combine this with the periodic scolding I give myself for not checking out newer albums, and I found myself looking a recent releases. Lo and behold, this album/project came out which fit it with my love of space exploration. Had never heard the English indie songwriter Darren Hayman, but was intrigued by his project of 12 songs honoring each of the 12 moonwalkers from Neil Armstrong to Gene Cernan. Almost seems like a wacky Sufjan Stevens project. Hayman is folksy and low fi so not an indie style I would naturally gravitate towards, and, as you might imagine, songs are hit or miss. Still, he has a nice melodic sense and many of these are cool or at the very least interesting. 4 stars of allmusic.com

Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism (2003)

Believe it or not, this is my first time ever listening to a Death Cab for Cutie album (in 11 years, I have exactly 4 listens/scrobbles on last.fm). They've never been much of a focus of MG listeners so my exposure has been limited. I think a friend of mine (who I don't discuss music with often and who I'm not too impressed with his musical chops anyway) told me they were his favorite group once.
They sound very typical of mellow indie of the era though for all I know they influenced that sound rather than mimicked it. Should I been wowed by this album - it's pleasant, mellow, benign I guess

Probably like you until yesterday, I keep meaning to listen to this band. The name comes up a lot among discussions about alternative rock. Some day. Some day...
